When a friend from kickboxing asked her to try out for the derby girls with her in 2009, she agreed. But what she didn't expect was to find her next athletic outlet and what some might call a "match made in derby heaven". Sharon D. Payne, or "Mighty Might" as her teammates affectionately call her, joined the Santa Cruz Derby Girls in the fall of 2009. She was an original member of the six skater Seabright Sirens roster in 2010 and was called up to play in her first Harbor Hellcats game in September of that same year. She spent the 2011 season as a strong blocker with the Hellcats before joining the Boardwalk Bombshells in 2012. She has ascended the ladder steadily and is now a pivotal member of the team, co-captaining the 2014 season with Queen Litigious.
According to her co-captain, Sharon is a "fierce leader and an inspirational and dedicated athlete", both on an off skates. As the "sensitive" side of the captain duo, Sharon often provides inspirational quotes to motivate her team. When not working at Cabrillo College or busy raising a son with her husband , Sharon can be found cross training and it is apparent in her strength and endurance on the track. She is a smart and focused player, with a calm and clean approach to the game, and is always where she needs to be during a jam. She regularly leads Saturday morning endurance practices for league members and has developed a post practice workout for the Bombshells known as "7 minutes in Heaven" that keeps them focused on moving up in the derby world. When not skating, Sharon enjoys nacho Fridays with her son and kickboxing at Westside Aerobics Martial Arts on Swift Street.
You can catch Sharon and the Boardwalk Bombshells at the Kaiser Permanente Arena twice this month, on May 10th and May 31st.
