Last year, Organic Panic skater Def Jen Wreckers set herself two goals: earn a spot on her team’s jammer rotation, and win the MVP award for a game. She accomplished both at the 2015 season closer Zombies versus Vampires grudge match. Coming into the 2016 season, “DJ,” as her teammates know her, is at the top of her game - and more determined than ever to obliterate the competition.
DJ began her derby career in 2009 up in Washington with the Bellingham Roller Betties. She progressed quickly through the ranks of the league, being drafted to a Bellingham home team upon completing their 8-week boot camp (which was also her first experience with roller skating). After two seasons with the Betties, she made her way down to California, skating with the Silicon Valley Roller Girls for a season before transferring to Santa Cruz. For the past two seasons, DJ has been with SCDG, where she has established a reputation as both a persistent, smart jammer and a team-oriented blocker with unending skating endurance.
According to her teammate and OP captain, Hellth Hazard, DJ is not only a formidable jamming threat on the track, but also an invaluable source of positive motivation for her team. “She's extremely determined with a wonderfully encouraging and positive attitude,” said Hazard. “She keeps a level head when the pressure is on and helps spread that calm intensity to the rest of the team.”
Off the track, DJ, a self-described “roller derby evangelist,” spreads the Good Word of Derby at every opportunity she gets. She can be seen representing SCDG at a dizzying number of community events - volunteering at blood drives, delivering holiday gifts for the league’s Adopt-A-Family program, and even advocating - successfully - for the construction of a new skate park in her community of Watsonville.
Outside of their involvement with SCDG, DJ and her husband, the “Pastor of Disaster” (a real-life pastor!), enjoy biking and skating around their Watsonville community with their dog, Archie.
Catch DJ and her team, Organic Panic, take on the Steamer Janes at the 2016 season opener - February 20th at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium.
