Kenny the Shark is the kind of skater most of us aspire to be, and she’s only 17. As the last remaining member of the original Santa Cruz Derby Groms, Kenny (nickname KTS) joined our junior league in 2009 and is enjoying her final year as a Grom like she always does: as an offensive powerhouse with impeccable timing, something that can only be accomplished through nine seasons of consistent roller derby blocking can bring.
“KTS is the kind of blocker that coaches have to develop jammer strategies around, otherwise she’ll wear those jammers like a back pack for 2 minutes solid," says her coach Ima Hotmess. It’s no surprise that she was voted “Best Blocker” by her team in 2017, and her dedication to the sport is apparent in not only her own success, but her dedication to the success of her teammates. The Gromshells are the current top ranked all-female team in the Junior Roller Derby Association. KTS has played a critical part in their success, including the 2017 Northwest Regional Championship and back-to-back JRDA Championships.
When Kenny’s not skating, she’s making plans to attend school in San Francisco, dabbling in photography, and dancing to her favorite tunes. She’s dedicated to her league both on and off the track, helping manage the Groms’ busy social media accounts. There’s a lot of love for KTS, and according to her coach Neo, “KTS is one of the nicest skaters you’ll ever meet, unless you happen to be the opposing jammer, then she’s absolutely terrifying.” Come see Kenny scare some jammers when the Gromshells play the California Mayhem at our home opener on March 17! And if you hear One Direction at halftime, you may even catch a glimpse of her busting a move or two.
