January’s Derby Girl of the Month keeps our extended Santa Cruz Derby Girls family connected. If you see Jenny Lawless, our spectacular Sponsorship Director, enjoying the outdoor adventures Scotts Valley has to offer, be sure to send a hang loose her way.
Originally, Lawless had no intentions of becoming a derby girl. After Boot Camp in October 2018, Coach Weezy suggested she try out. Seizing the moment, Lawless jumped in and graduated to the Fresh Meat membership pool. Off the track, Lawless’s service as Sponsorship Director has been nothing less than exceptional. She takes great care to show our sponsors how vital their support is to our league, and often shares personalized snacks and goodies with them at our home games. When not connecting with our current partners in person, Jenny seeks out future beneficial relationships and recently signed another $5,000 sponsor. Donations such as these have been pivotal in growing the Bombshells international reputation. Participating at playoffs in Spain in September 2018 helped the Bombshells grow in WFTDA rankings to #14 last year. Commenting on Jenny Lawless’s role within the league, Nominator and Executive Director Shamrock N. Roller, remarked that, Lawless is fiercely dedicated and focused at partnering with businesses that are looking to support our League. She has such great business savvy and really knows how to take care of all our sponsors from our newest to those that have been with us since day one.” By day, Lawless (aka Jen Isola) creates design and marketing content for her clients at Bean Creek Studio; a graphic and web design studio in Scotts Valley, Clearly, her business acumen has helped her hone her skills to truly understand the needs and values of those she works (and plays) with.
Lawless takes her adventure seeking off the track, too. She is as comfortable on snow and and in water, as she is on land. Prior to derby, seemingly “forever ago,” according to Jenny, she competed in field hockey, basketball and softball. More recently she can be found mountain biking, walking everywhere, snowboarding the slopes in Lake Tahoe and hitting up the local Skypark skatepark. When given the chance to explore warmer regions, Lawless spends time with a more colorful bunch under the waves at Two-Step, in Kona, Hawaii. She is also looking forward to another Costa Rica escapade in the future.
It is league members like Jenny Lawless, with her high level of adventure and expert care for those around her, that give the Santa Cruz Derby Girls such a welcoming feel. When she met a Boot Camper at Skateworks earlier in January, Lawless calmed the Boot Campers fears by sharing her experience with SCDG’s positive culture. Lawless defined the feeling using the words of her teammate, O’KrakenWhip, as “Derby Love.”
If you’re lucky enough to meet Jenny Lawless in person, you’ll surely be welcomed by her Derby Love.
