August 2012 - Polly Kneesya, #5-0

Polly KneesyaAs her name might suggest, Polly Kneesya #5-0 came to Santa Cruz Derby Girls in July 2009 as an accomplished surfer, having traveled and competed all over the world. She's even surfed professionally and opened the first all-female owned surf shop, Paradise Surf Shop in Pleasure Point.

Her athleticism and skill lent itself perfectly to playing roller derby, where Polly quickly moved up the rankings, getting rostered with the Bombshells not long after joining the league. Although a broken ankle at a tournament in Tucson kept her out of play for several months, Polly bounced back with athletic prowess and remains a force to be reckoned with as both a strong blocker, pivot and jammer for the Harbor Hellcats. Her constant awareness and agility on the track makes her one of the most aggressive and effective offensive players on the team and a well respected derby girl.

Polly’s dedication to and passion for derby can be seen both on and off the track. In addition to being the 2011 Co-Captain of the Hellcats, Polly has served on both the Sponsorship and Community First committees, where she built and maintained relationships with local businesses and non-profits.

This year she spearheaded the creation of the upcoming Santa Cruz Derby Girls Trading Cards and Calendar. Working with local photographer Gary Irving, Polly arranged photo shoots (and even did hair and makeup) for every member of all three Santa Cruz teams and is helping to design the merch that will be released later this year! Don't miss your last opportunity to see Polly play at home (she'll be retiring at the end of the season) when the Harbor Hellcats take on the High Country Hellcats of Sonora on August 25th at the Civic!
