 | July 19th Tryouts Absolutely Amazing! On July 19th, twenty-nine brave women showed up at the Scotts Valley Sports Center to test their skills at roller derby. These women, hailing from Big Sur and Monterey to Bonny Doon and San Jose, skated their butts off for two straight hours in front of the Santa Cruz Derby Girls. They demonstrated a wide range of skill levels, from first-time skaters to roller queens. In borrowed pads, skates and helmets, these women endured drills, survived sprints, and were rubbed raw with rink rash. It is getting very competitive to become Fresh Meat -- this was SCDG's largest tryout to date. Previous tryouts have averaged about six women; the turnout for July was more than a four fold increase! All that tried out gave it their all and we are excited to have new members and skaters join SCDG!
