Santa Cruz Derby Girls join forces with Homeless Garden Project for 2017 Season
We at the Santa Cruz Derby Girls are not only dedicated to delivering full-contact, fast-wheeling sports entertainment—we're also committed to giving back to the Santa Cruz community. For the 2017 season, SCDG will partner with local non-profit the Homeless Garden Project to provide volunteer support, publicity, and a portion of ticket proceeds at the end of the season.
The Homeless Garden Project offers a job training and transitional employment program, as well as educational and support services, to help individuals experiencing homelessness regain necessary skills and self-reliance. With a 92% success rate of employment and housing achieved by recent graduates, the program has been a success in providing a direct route to stable housing and employment. HGP's programs primarily take place on a 3-acre organic farm that grows fruit, vegetables, and flowers for the Santa Cruz community.
SCDG chose this year's featured non-profit in recognition of the Homeless Garden Project's vision for a thriving and inclusive community, workforce, and local food system. We're excited to provide HGP with volunteer support throughout the year—SCDG volunteers will pitch in at the farm, the HGP downtown store, and Community Supper fundraisers. HGP will also be represented at each of the Santa Cruz Derby Girls bouts this season. Come out to cheer on your local roller derby team and support the Homeless Garden Project. Join us for the season opener on March 11th at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium! Tickets on sale now at SantaCruzTickets.com.
