Steamer Janes top Organic Panic

SANTA CRUZ >> The Santa Cruz Derby Girls’ Steamer Janes won 192-101 in an exciting game against the Organic Panic at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium on Saturday night.

It was an important game for the Janes (2-1), who advance to the Home Team Championship versus the undefeated Redwood Rebels (3-0).

What started as an evenly matched back-and-forth battle quickly turned into a game dominated by the Janes.

Organic Panic (0-4) scored first but both teams traded lead status and points early on.

The Steamer Janes found their rhythm five minutes into the game and began to pull away. The Janes relied on a two-jammer rotation, while the Organic Panic favored a four-jammer rotation. Sweet Baby G picked up a penalty, giving CoraZone (Cora Olsen), a power jam. Unfortunately for the Panic, CoraZone picked up three consecutive penalties before she was able to pass the star to her pivot four jams later.

The Janes provided swift, effective offensive blocking to help their jammer through, while their blockers made it difficult for the OP jammer to escape a tight, rotating wall. The OP picked up their first lead jammer call in six jams but were unable to convert lead status into points. Toward the end of the half, the Janes experimented with different jammers.

The Steamer Janes were ahead 99-45 at halftime.

The Organic Panic started strong in the second half. The Steamer Janes stuck with an expanded jammer rotation that worked in favor of the Organic Panic, culminating in a seven jam lead streak for the OP. Late in the game, the Steamer Janes reasserted their dominance.

This is the first year of home team play for the Santa Cruz Derby Girls. Home teams provide a way to showcase the league’s superstars alongside up-and-coming skaters in mixed teams of equal skill level, as well as provide an opportunity for derby fans to watch all their favorite skaters in action in SCDG’s home venue.

The next game will be on May 27 when the Steamer Janes take on the undefeated Redwood Rebels — a preview of the Home Team Championship on June 27.
